Psalm 34

Of David. When he pretended to be insane before Abimelech, who drove him away, and he left.



1 I will extol the Lord at all times;

his praise will always be on my lips.

2 My soul will boast in the Lord;

let the afflicted hear and rejoice.

3 Glorify the Lord with me;

let us exalt his name together.

The title tells us the events under which this Psalm was written. We don’t always have this exact information but the event recorded here are told (in full form) in 1 Samuel 21

Praise the Lord!

Under what circumstances should we extol (or “praise”) the Lord? All

David reminded us that the praise of the Lord should always be on our lips.

Even down to our inmost being, regardless of circumstances, we should boast in the Lord. Why? Because He is good, just, worthy, Holy, faithful and true.

Notice David’s directive in verse 2: he wants the afflicted to hear and rejoice with him! He wants to interrupt our self-centeredness and get us refocused on our Creator!

In verse 3 he truly invites everyone to join him in lifting up the Lord. It is a natural response to want to share the excitement we feel. Don’t you tell everyone about a birth, a new car, a new house, a paid bill, a healing, a blessing? David does too and says “let’s all celebrate together!”
