Most of us imagine God’s will as a destination.
We pray for the next step, hoping He’ll reveal the entire map before we move. Most of us want the Holy Spirit to show us where the road ends before we’re willing to take the first step. But Scripture often paints a different picture. The Lord usually reveals His will one obedient step at a time. Joseph’s story is a perfect example.
Let’s read Genesis 37:12-17 as we see this play out this week:
12 Now his brothers had gone to graze their father’s flocks near Shechem, 13 and Israel said to Joseph, “As you know, your brothers are grazing the flocks near Shechem. Come, I am going to send you to them.”

“Very well,” he replied.
14 So he said to him, “Go and see if all is well with your brothers and with the flocks, and bring word back to me.” Then he sent him off from the Valley of Hebron.
When Joseph arrived at Shechem, 15 a man found him wandering around in the fields and asked him, “What are you looking for?”
16 He replied, “I’m looking for my brothers. Can you tell me where they are grazing their flocks?”
17 “They have moved on from here,” the man answered. “I heard them say, ‘Let’s go to Dothan.’”
So Joseph went after his brothers and found them near Dothan.
Jacob asks Joseph to do something simple: go check on your brothers and bring back a report. It’s an ordinary request. There is no grand vision, no dramatic calling, no hint that this day will be any different from the one before it.
Joseph simply responds in obedience.
When he arrives, his brothers aren’t where he expected them to be. He could have assumed the assignment was over and gone home. Instead, after learning they had moved on, Joseph continued searching until he found them.
It’s a small detail, but an important one. Joseph wasn’t just willing to start the assignment; he was determined to finish it.
What Joseph didn’t know was that every step he took that day was leading him into a future he never could have imagined.
That’s often how obedience works.
The Lord rarely gives us the entire blueprint. He asks us to take the next faithful step. We obey without knowing where the road will lead, trusting that He sees what we cannot.
The next conversation, the next opportunity, the next act of faithfulness, the next “yes” to Jesus may become a defining moment in your life. Not because the task itself seems extraordinary, but because our Lord delights in using ordinary obedience to accomplish extraordinary purposes.
You may think you’re simply being faithful today.
Jesus may be writing a much bigger story.
Don’t underestimate the power of ordinary obedience. The path He asks you to walk today may lead places you could never have anticipated.
You don’t need to know where every step will lead. You only need to know the One who is leading you. Like Joseph, the most ordinary act of obedience today may become the beginning of a story only Jesus could write.
