Have you ever been thirsty?
A few weeks ago, it was 112 degrees when I decided to mow the lawn. I enjoy mowing the lawn, but at 112, the air feels a little different. The heat of the air—radiating from the ground too—made me thirstier than what I’d normally be when I was outside and sweating. And when you’re that thirsty, only water can satisfy you.
Spiritually, our souls can get thirsty too. We long for something to satisfy our deep, deep thirst. We can be dehydrated in our souls and feel dried, worn out, rung out.
And when our souls get like that, only Jesus can satisfy it.
In John 7:45-52, we read…
Finally the temple guards went back to the chief priests and the Pharisees, who asked them, “Why didn’t you bring him in?”
“No one ever spoke the way this man does,” the guards replied.
“You mean he has deceived you also?” the Pharisees retorted. “Have any of the rulers or the Pharisees believed in him? No! But this mob that knows nothing of the law—there is a curse on them.”
Nicodemus, who had gone to Jesus earlier and who was one of their own number, asked, “Does our law condemn a man without first hearing him to find out what he has been doing?”
They replied, “Are you from Galilee, too? Look into it, and you will find that a prophet does not come out of Galilee.”
John 7:45-52
New International Version
The people were divided on Who Jesus was, but verses 45-52 inform us the highly religious people, in their arrogance, simply refused to believe in Him.
They even claimed the people were under a curse because they didn’t know the Law. A Law, by the way, these men were charged with teaching them. If indeed the people didn’t know the Law, whose fault was it really? But these “common people” were so much closer to understanding the identity and mission of Jesus than the so-called experts.
What about you? What’s your response? Who is Jesus?
Better yet, do you accept Jesus for WHO HE IS or WHO YOU WANT HIM TO BE?
He is Who He is regardless of what you think about Him but do you accept Who He is? Do you believe in HIM?
When your soul is thirsty, only one thing can satisfy it: Jesus. When I consider this, the words to an old song come to mind:
Verse 1
Who can satisfy my soul like You
Who on earth could comfort me
And love me like You do
Who could ever be more faithful true
I will trust in You
Lord I will trust in You my GodVerse 2
Living Water rain down Your life on me
Cleaning me refreshing me
With life abundantly
River full of life
I’ll go where You lead
I will trust in You
Lord I will trust in You My GodChorus
“Who Can Satisfy My Soul Like You”
There is a Fountain who is a King
Victorious Warrior and Lord of everything
My Rock my Shelter my very own
Blessed Redeemer who reigns upon the throne
