You
ever met someone who was the “hero of the little guy”? I don’t mean someone who says they are but someone
who actually stands up for those who cannot defend themselves. It may be a parent, a child, a man or a
woman. It may be a politician (hey—it’s possible!) or a pastor. It may be the most surprising person or they
may seem to always have a cause written across their chest. Whoever it is, they are a hero of those who
are defenseless or powerless.
These
earthly heroes are nothing compared to our Hero in Heaven. He is the ultimate defender. He is the ultimate protector. And today as we continue in Psalm 75, we read
in verses 2-5:
2 You say, “I
choose the appointed time;
it
is I who judge with equity.
3 When the
earth and all its people quake,
it
is I who hold its pillars firm.
4 To the
arrogant I say, ‘Boast no more,’
and
to the wicked, ‘Do not lift up your horns.
5 Do not lift
your horns against heaven;
do
not speak so defiantly.’ ”
Verses two and three are an encouragement to
us as believers. As we assemble in
worship, we must submit ourselves to the Word of the Lord as it is sung,
prayed, or taught. The Lord has told He
has set the times of judgment. It is not
ours to know (cf. Acts 1:7) but He does.
And when the Lord does judge, it is “with
equity”
and it is absolute.
Verses four and five are words of warning to
those who are unbelievers. Humans living
independent of Him don’t impress the Lord.
Truth be told, there’s no such thing as being in control. Only our arrogance suggests we are actually
able to control anything in our lives.
We can’t guarantee we will even wake up in the morning, much less
anything else.
Even
a quick read of the Proverbs reveals verses like Proverbs 11:2, “When pride
comes, then comes disgrace, but with humility comes wisdom.” And verses like Proverbs 29:23, “Pride brings
a person low, but the lowly in spirit gain honor.”
For
us to truly come under the protection of our Hero, we must get out from under
our own, prideful protection. Whether it’s
savings accounts or ingenuity, creativity or optimism, family name or good “luck”,
we have to find our shelter in Him.
Here is a quick way for letting the Lord be your defender in total surrender:
1. Acknowledge your inability to control life (James
4:14).
2. Be still and recognize His power, position,
and preeminence (Psalm 48).
3. Confess your desire to surrender daily to Him (Matthew 16:24-27).
Verse
1
You paint the night
You count the stars and
You call them by name
The skies proclaim
God You reign
Your glory shines
You teach the sun when
to bring a new day
Creation sings
God You reign
Verse
2
You part the seas
You move the mountains
with the words that You say
My song remains
God You reign
You hold my life
You know my heart and
You call me by name
I live to say
God You reign
Chorus
God You reign
God You reign
Forever and ever
God You reign
“God You Reign”
