It is the Lord who upholds us and all His creation.  Throughout this Psalm we are reminded of God’s graciousness to His people and we are given reasons our Lord is worthy of praise.

David writes in verses 1-4: The Lord is Worthy of Praise as Our Savior!

1 Praise awaits you, our God, in Zion;

to you our vows will be fulfilled.

2 You who answer prayer, to you all people will come.

3 When we were overwhelmed by sins,

you forgave our transgressions.

4 Blessed are those you choose

and bring near to live in your courts!

We are filled with the good things of your house,

of your holy temple.

When we cry out for help, the Lord hears us and listens.  “What a privilege to carry everything to God in prayer” (from “What a Friend We Have in Jesus”).  It is the Lord alone who is capable of answering prayer (verse 2).

Verse three is such an encouragement: when we were lost and absolutely drowning in the depth of our sin, the Lord forgave us!  Because of the blood of Christ, our sins are paid for and we can approach the Lord with confidence in Him.

Furthermore, when we come near to our Savior, then the blessings of God can flow through our life.

He is worthy of praise as our Savior!

David continues in verses 5-8: The Lord is Worthy of Praise as Our Strength!

5 You answer us with awesome and righteous deeds,

God our Savior,

the hope of all the ends of the earth and of the farthest seas,

6 who formed the mountains by your power,

having armed yourself with strength,

7 who stilled the roaring of the seas, the roaring of their waves,

and the turmoil of the nations.

8 The whole earth is filled with awe at your wonders;

where morning dawn
s, where evening fades,

you call forth songs of joy.

When the Lord answers us, He answers in strength with “awesome and righteous deeds”.  This is our God:

  • The Hope of the world
  • The Builder of the earth
  • The One armed in strength
  • The Calmer of the Seas
  • The Peacemaker of the Nations

No wonder “the whole earth is filled with awe at your wonders”!  This is not a God who is incapable of doing anything about our circumstances.  This is the God who is the only true God.  This is the One who calls “forth sons of joy” at the expression of His mighty power.

He is worthy of praise as our Strength!

David concludes Psalm 65 in verses 9-13: The Lord is Worthy of Praise as Our Sustainer!

9 You care for the land and water it; you enrich it abundantly.

The streams of God are filled with water

to provide the people with grain,

for so you have ordained it.

10 You drench its furrows and level its ridges;

you soften it with showers and bless its crops.

11 You crown the year with your bounty,

and your carts overflow with abundance.

12 The grasslands of the wilderness overflow;

the hills are clothed with gladness.

13 The meadows are covered with flocks

and the valleys are mantled with grain;

they shout for joy and sing.

He is praiseworthy because He cares.  The earth and its natural order is testimony of the sustaining ability of the Lord Almighty.  He softens the land with rain and causes crops to grow.  As the spring wildflowers grow, creation itself lifts its hands to the Lord “with gladness”.  Creation understands who its maker is, and its beauty testifies to it.  Shouldn’t we do the same?

He is worthy of praise as our Sustainer!

Take a few minutes now to praise the Lord for being your Savior, Strength, and Sustainer.  You are blessed far more than you know, dearly loved of the Lord!
