Part 2 of 4: Verses 19-27
Last week, we looked at the first 18 verses of Psalm 18 and saw three things demonstrated: the protection of the Lord, the understanding of the Lord and the deliverance of the Lord. The overarching truth of the first section of this Psalm is that the Lord will answer when we call!
Tonight we continue with this Psalm, starting in verse 19 and going through verse 27.
19 He brought me out into a spacious place;
he rescued me because he delighted in me.
20The Lord has dealt with me according to my righteousness;
according to the cleanness of my hands he has rewarded me.
21 For I have kept the ways of the Lord;
I have not done evil by turning from my God.
22 All his laws are before me;
I have not turned away from his decrees.
23 I have been blameless before him
and have kept myself from sin.
24 The Lord has rewarded me according to my righteousness,
according to the cleanness of my hands in his sight.
25 To the faithful you show yourself faithful,
to the blameless you show yourself blameless,
26 to the pure you show yourself pure,
but to the crooked you show yourself shrewd.
27 You save the humble
but bring low those whose eyes are haughty.
Verse 19
David is finishing the idea from verse 18 here “They confronted me in the day of my disaster, but the Lord was my support. 19 He brought me out into a spacious place; he rescued me because he delighted in me.
Again from last week: God hears us when we call!
Verses 20-24
· David tells us something very powerful in verse 20 (“the LORD has dealt with me according to my righteousness…”
· This means that the Lord has a conditional response to us. Did you know that? If you are living in sin, God will answer proportionally. This, however, was not the issue with David. Verses 21-24 tell us that as David examined his heart here’s what he found:
o 21 For I have kept the ways of the Lord;I have not done evil by turning from my God. 22 All his laws are before me; I have not turned away from his decrees. 23 I have been blameless before him and have kept myself from sin. 24 The Lord has rewarded me according to my righteousness, according to the cleanness of my hands in his sight.
o When you call on the Lord, do you have this understanding? More importantly, can you speak as David did? We should!
o How does the Lord know we love Him?
§ John 14:15 “If you love me, you will obey what I command.
Verses 25-27
The way we relate to the Lord determines how the Lord relates to us.
1 Sam 15:22
But Samuel replied:
“Does the Lord delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices
as much as in obeying the voice of the Lord?
To obey is better than sacrifice,
and to heed is better than the fat of rams.
Overarching truth: God rewards when we obey!
