7 Lift up your heads, O you gates;
be lifted up, you ancient doors,
that the King of glory may
come in.
The leader asks:
8 Who is this King of glory?
The people say:
The Lord strong and mighty,
the Lord mighty in battle.
9 Lift up your heads, O you gates;
lift them up, you ancient doors,
that the King of glory may come in.
The leader asks:
10 Who is he, this King of glory?
The people say:
The Lord Almighty —
he is the King of glory.
Selah
· Verse 7 refers, most likely, to the city of Jerusalem. David was calling for the ancient gates to open wide for the triumphant entry.
· This was a poetic way of displaying the superiority of the one entering. They should lift up their heads because the King of glory—Jesus!–is about to come in.
· Verses 8-10 give an explanation of this “King of Glory” by giving a Q and A about Him:
o 8 Who is this King of glory?
§ The Lord strong and mighty,
§ the Lord mighty in battle.
o 9 Lift up your heads, O you gates; lift them up, you ancient doors, that the King of glory may come in.
o 10 Who is he, this King of glory?
§ The Lord Almighty —
§ he is the King of glory.
